This is an original Model 1842 69 caliber smoothbore musket made at the Harpers Ferry arsenal. The lock marked Harpers Ferry and is dated 1847 which puts it in possible use in the Mexican War as well as the late Civil War. The overall condition is good for the age with some dents and scratches in the stock and pitting on the exterior metal, especially in the breech area. The bore is dark with some significant pitting. The lock functions correctly. The ramrod is original and full length. At some point in the past, someone has added a brass shield in the breech area to prevent the wood from being damaged from the percussion flash. It appears that it can be removed if desired. There is a shallow dovetail cut on the top of the barrel about 6 1/2" from the breech where someone had installed a rear sight at some time in the past. The bayonet is marked US and is in good condition with a small bend near the tip that is barely noticeable. Overall a desirable Harpers Ferry musket at a reasonable price.
