In this realistic dramatization of life in colonial Virginia, a young boy learns about the role of a blacksmith in an agricultural frontier community. Taking a broken chain to Williamsburg for repair, the boy finds master blacksmith John Allsgood hard at work--but willing to take time to explain his work.  He tells why the blacksmith or "hammerman" was one of the most vital craftsmen in town.  His skills were necessary year-round to keep tools, farm implements, and firearms in working order. You'll learn too why a good hammerman needed imagination, coordination, pride in his work, and good management skills.

Bonus Feature The Blacksmith Forging an Andiron. Colonial Williamsburg blacksmith demonstrates some of the fundamental techniques used to shape a fireplace andiron after an eighteenth-century original.

Running time: 37 minutes plus 25 minutes of The Blacksmith Forging an Andiron.
