The name 'Woodland' was assigned to all tribes living east of the Mississippi River between the Gulf of Mexico and James Bay. It was these Woodland cultural areas of eastern America and their indigenous tribes-such as the Siouans, Iroquians, and Algonkians-that played a major role in shaping the New World's history. They were resourceful warriors, and in at least three major battles between Indian and Euro-American military forces more soldiers were killed than at the famed battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, where Custer lost his command.
