This is an original Japanese matchlock smoothbore musket purchased in Japan. This item was acquired by John Krause 1839-1918 during a personal visit to Japan in the 1890-1910 time frame along with numerous other Oriental pieces. The overall length is 52 1/2" with a 40" barrel and a weight of 9 lbs. The bore is approximately 50 caliber and the bore is dark and pitted. The brass lock functions correctly. The stock is adorned with many applied brass inlays. The stock wood appears to be a oak like wood, possibly fruitwood. The overall condition is good to very good considering the age. A few of the inlays are missing some nails and several of the pins holding the barrel to the stock are missing but easily replaced. The barrel has engraved and inlayed patterns as well. Dating the manufacture of the matchlock is difficult but certainly in the 19th century, possibly in the early to mid 1800's. A very attractive piece and great conversation item for any collection.
