FORT WILLIAM HENRY 1755-57 A Battle, Two Sieges and Bloody Massacre. by Ian Castle, Illustrated by Graham Turner. The seige of Fort William Henry is one of the most famous episodes of the French & Indian War. Built after the Battle of Lake George in 1755, and subjected to two sieges in March and August 1757 by French forces, Fort William Henry finally surrendered after a gallant defense by Lt. Col. Monro and his men, and the British garrison marched away with colors flying. As the Garrison prepared to march for Fort Edward a flood of enraged Native Americans swept over the column, unleashing an unstoppable tide of slaughter. James Fenimore Cooper’s portrayal of this event in Last of the Mohicans has colored our view of this event. This study clarifies and is based n new research on the campaign, including some fascinating archaeological work that has taken place in the last 20 years.  703505
